Life in Virginia and North Carolina, 1866-1881.

Account of a white northern-born school teacher working with southern blacks, first at Ft. Magruder, Virginia, then in Warrenton, North Carolina. She describes the progress of the students in their studies, the hardships they endure, and the injustices committed against them by whites. Also included are descriptions of African-American customs, and accounts of her trips to Richmond and Williamsburg, Virginia, and Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Pennsylvania Freedmen's Relief Association was established on Mar. 5, 1862 to provide relief to freed slaves during the American Civil War. Following the war, the organization focused on educating former slaves by providing funding for teachers.
